Ubamarket’s origins are very simple, born out of frustration that my customary text message shopping list seemed to be specifically designed to send me on an infuriating wild goose chase up and down the British aisles.
However, the name is a little more contrived. Often mistaken for ‘Ubermarket’ (as in ‘Uber Market’), it’s actually an acronym. Ubamarket is spelled ‘UBA’ Market for two specific reasons.
Firstly ‘UBA’ stands for ‘universal barcode application’ because the shopping app is designed to be universally applicable to all retail outlets whilst recognising all barcode logic (and there’s a LOT of that out there), from anywhere in the World.
Secondly, in grocery terms, it symbolises the next level. From supermarkets to hyper markets to Ubamarkets – the ultimate hi-tech store…
So, next time you hear the word Ubamarket (usually at a retail conference or somewhere similarly scintillating!) you’ll know that it’s not even a real word or phrase (in the way that perhaps Uber market would be) – because, for such a game-changing new product we felt we had to invent a whole new word!
